(Woodstock, GA) Summit Financial Solutions is offering another documents shred day, Saturday, May 18, 2013 from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm. This event is free and open to the public. A professional shredding company will be on site to shred personal and confidential documents. There is no need to remove staples, paper clips, or folders (no boxes please). There is no limit as to the amount of materials you can bring to be shredded.

Federal law requires you to maintain copies of your tax returns and supporting documents for three years. This is called the “three-year law” and leads many people to believe they’re safe provided they retain their documents for this period of time.

However, if the IRS believes you have significantly underreported your income (by 25 percent or more), or believes there may be indication of fraud, it may go back six years in an audit. To be safe, refer to the Record Retention Guide on the Summit Financial website The Record Retention Guide can be found under the resources tab on the home page.
